Performance
Academic Assistant: Abir Kobeissi
The class will focus on the expanded field of performance unterstood as an intermedial, fluid space of thinking and making. A special emphasis will be placed on liveliness, on communicating through movement, action and the body, in space and time, but connections with other mediums and means will also be encouraged, following an existing tradition of entanglements with sculpture, painting, dance, digital media and more.
We will explore “performance” as an umbrella term, whose history connects different strands of art practices, from different geographical spaces and (art) histories, and whose future holds exciting, new possibilities. The performative approach to art is, therefore, another way to engage with and reflect on our world at large, to ask and answer questions about the living body, how is it mediated and expanded today; about labour, economy of means and art production on a planet with depleting resources; about coexistence with our non-human others – whether machinic or organic; questions therefore pertaining to technology, economy, philosophy and ecology. It is this relational quality of the performative that I hope will spark the most interest and that we can explore in depth.
